Electronic Signature vs Digital Signature

Electronic signature describes the signing action. A cryptographic digital signature is a technical mechanism for checking signed data. The terms should not be treated as interchangeable when choosing a document workflow.

Separate the business action from the technology

Electronic signing concerns how a person expresses agreement in an electronic process. A cryptographic digital signature uses keys and a verification operation to help detect changes to signed data and check its origin; NIST describes this technical meaning in its glossary.

Drawing a signature or placing a stamp image on a PDF does not, on its own, demonstrate that a cryptographic digital signature was applied.

Questions to ask before choosing

Does your process require a visible signature, a recorded acceptance, or a verifiable certificate-based signature? Who will verify the completed file, and in which software?

If a receiving organization requires a specific signature technology, obtain its technical requirements and test a sample completed file before choosing a workflow.

How to evaluate Khtoom for this requirement

Khtoom supports electronic document signing and stamping workflows. This guide does not claim that every output carries a signer certificate or a qualified digital signature.

Review a representative output with your receiving organization. Evaluate its visible content, available request records, and any required signature validation separately.

FAQ

Does a signature image prove a PDF has a digital signature?

No. A visible mark and a cryptographic signature are different things. Check the file using the verification method required by the recipient.

Which method should my team use?

Start with the receiving organization’s requirements and your document process. Verify a sample output before committing to a particular method.
